We are studying how well Chinese adopted children understand aspects of adoption and their identity. Additionally, we seek to understand how families handle/deal with the adoption and ethnic or racial differences of their child. We understand that you have adopted a child from China. We know that parenting any child can be both exciting and challenging. Parenting and adopted child presents unique challenges. Sometimes it can be difficult for parents to determine what is going on in their child’s mind about their adoptive experience. We want to understand how you and your child have approached aspects of her adoption. We believe that if we can understand your experiences, we can better help other families grasp how their children may view the issue of their own adoption. We seek your help and your child’s help. We would like you and your child to participate in this study. Your participation will include allowing us to talk to you and your child. Specifically, we will come to your home at a time that is convenient for you and your family to ask you some questions. In our talk with you, we will ask questions about your child’s understanding of culture and ethnicity, and how you have talked with your child about her background and about adoption. We also will ask you to complete some questionnaires about family life. In our talk with your child, we will ask her questions about herself, adoption, family and cultural difference. During this visit, which should last about two hours, we will also provide an activity for your child to complete and a gift for them to keep. We hope that you are interested in participating or learning more about this study. If you are, please contact us at: 617-627-5909 and leave your name and telephone number. If we are not available, we will return your call as soon as we can! Thank you! | |||
