Frequently Asked Questions Return Home
Question 1: Why are you only interested in looking at international adoption in families who have children from China?
Answer: When we began our study we wanted to look at an area of adoption that was under researched. After conducting a thorough literature review, we decided that exploring adoption of children from China was an area that would benefit from study. Additionally, because of the numbers of children adopted from China, we thought we could secure an appropriate sample size.

Question 2: Are you looking for certain types of families to participate?
Answer: No. Our eligibility requirement for families is that the family has a child from China who is between the ages of 6 and 8 years old. We are especially interested in all types of diversity, from different ideas about how to parent children from China to different family types. We are adamant about wanting to explore all the different ways families think about, react to and experience adoption, ethnicity and family. The goal of our study is not to claim that a particular form of parenting is best, but rather to explore the variety of experiences that families who have adopted a child from China have.

Question 3: Is the study longitudinal?
Answer: At this time the study is exploratory and involves a one-time interview. We recently submitted our research to the Second International Conference on Adoption Research and were accepted to present our work in a paper symposium. We will be working to secure funding to make the study longitudinal.

Question 4: Can parents (participants) receive the results of the study?
Answer: We are more than happy to send participants the results from aggregated data when it becomes available. We will not send parents the responses from their child individually because the children’s responses are confidential.

Question 5: What exactly do you mean when you say the children’s (or parent’s) responses are confidential?
Answer: We audio-record the interview and later transcribe it to be coded and analyzed. However, we delete names from the interview transcripts, assigning each family an identification number. Therefore all results we get are confidential but not anonymous. We store transcripts and files in locked and password protected files. Members of the research team are the only people with access to the files.

Question 6: I’m really busy right now, but I’d like to participate. How long is the study going on for?
Answer: We are certain that we will continue to collect data from families over the summer and fall of next year. Currently, we have no deadline for evaluating our data collection.
